1884-1962. US social worker, lecturer and
First Lady; her newspaper column `My Day' was
widely syndicated. She was a delegate to the
UN general assembly and later chair of the UN
commission on human rights 1946-51. She
helped to draw up the Declaration of Human
Rights at the UN 1945. Within the Democratic
Party she formed the left-wing Americans for
Democratic Action group 1947. She was married
to President Franklin Roosevelt. The niece of
Theodore Roosevelt, she was educated in
Europe. Following her husband's death 1945,
she continued to work on civil rights for US
blacks and for human rights worldwide.
