  1. 1884-1962. US social worker, lecturer and
  2. First Lady; her newspaper column `My Day' was
  3. widely syndicated. She was a delegate to the
  4. UN general assembly and later chair of the UN
  5. commission on human rights 1946-51. She
  6. helped to draw up the Declaration of Human
  7. Rights at the UN 1945. Within the Democratic
  8. Party she formed the left-wing Americans for
  9. Democratic Action group 1947. She was married
  10. to President Franklin Roosevelt. The niece of
  11. Theodore Roosevelt, she was educated in
  12. Europe. Following her husband's death 1945,
  13. she continued to work on civil rights for US
  14. blacks and for human rights worldwide.
